India is one of the world's booming economic success stories. However, for a lot of people it's a place of poverty, illiteracy, hunger, poor health and a lack of education. Unfortunately, children often bear the brunt of this inequality. It is estimated that around 8 million 6-14 year olds in India are out of school. Girls are less likely to be educated and are often sent to work or to beg at the age of 3.

Departing on 29th March 2012, 23 pupils and 5 staff members will embark on the trip of a lifetime to Goa, India. The purpose of the trip is to start the work on Liahona Light, which is a run-down building that, once complete, will become a residential house/school for 50 abandoned girls. Our aim is to regenerate this building so that it becomes a safe living environment where the children can seek shelter and gain an education.

At Silcoates we aim to create an on-going relationship with Liahona Light so that our students can return every other year to continue to support the school.
